Sport


An international sized gymnasium and expansive sporting fields are a feature of the school. A wide range of sporting opportunities in local, regional and state competitions is provided. Recreational sports also feature in the sports program.

Southern Cross School K-12 enters more than 30 teams each year in both Combined High Schools State Knockout and other local/regional competitions.

Lyon: Blue
Named after Harry Lyon: American navigator

Ulm: Yellow
Named after Charles Ulm: Australian co-pilot

Warner: Red
Named after Jim Warner: American radio operator

Smith: Green
Named after Charles Kingsford Smith: Australian commander and pilot


Sports Days

Years K-6:

Sports day varies from term to term.



Years 7-8: Integrated Sport

Students in year 7 and 8 have a double period of sport each week, which is integrated with their PDHPE classes. The sporting activities are presented by trained PDHPE teachers. This approach allows a direct extension to the physical skills and experience being developed in PDHPE units. In year 7 the sport emphasis is on skills development and their application to games involving hitting, kicking and throwing/catching.

Year 8 students experience the games of cricket, basketball and soccer. All students participate in cross country, athletics, dance and aquatics during their sport periods.



Years 9-10: Recreational Sport

Thursday periods 1-2.
Students choose a different each term with most activities having a recreational basis.
The range of sporting choices include:

Angling

Badminton

Dance

Netball

Power walking

Skateboarding

Soccer

Squash

Surfing

Tae kwon do

Tennis

Tenpin Bowling




Year 11:

Students in Year 11 have one period of sport each week. A range of recreational sports activities are presented by the PDHPE staff. Year 11 students are active in choosing their groups program.



Year 12:

Sport is optional and is held at the same time as Years 9-11.
