Merit Scheme

The 7-12 Merit and Behaviour code aims at:

  • Encouraging students to develop self-discipline by accepting responsibility for their own behaviour.

  • Promoting responsible student behaviour and developing practices which prevent unacceptable and irresponsible behaviour.

  • Ensuring the right of every student to learn and every teacher to teach without the interference or interruption of others.

IMPLEMENTATION

Students will be recognised in their class groups by appropriate positive teacher comment, both verbal and written, in monitoring of students' work and in reports.

Students will be recognised on school assemblies by presentation of certificates. These awards shall be presented by staff or the Student Representative Council to honour students for their endeavours in academic, sporting, cultural or civic fields within or of benefit to the school. Students will also be recognised for special academic or sporting, cultural or civic achievements at formal assemblies. This recognition will be by way of special certificates.

Students will be recognised for their continuing efforts towards self improvement and development as a responsible member of their school community by awards and the accumulation of points towards Bronze, Silver and Gold level awards.

Each faculty shall determine and clearly explain their own system and what constitutes the award of a merit certificate within the following scheme.

WHO CAN NOMINATE STUDENTS FOR MERIT CERTIFICATES?

These awards can be nominated by teachers, S.R.C. members or members of the school community who have regular involvement in the school or with its students. Where the student has suggested recognition this must be endorsed by the appropriate teacher. These will all be screened by the welfare committee.

Welfare Committee Review Procedure

Students nominating for all Merit Levels will have their eligibility for their level award determined at the fortnightly meetings of the Welfare Committee. Names of eligible students will be presented to the Welfare Committee before final approval. The Welfare Committee will review overall school participation, application and behaviour and confirm final eligibility for Merit Level award. Where concerns are raised about a student's eligibility by the Welfare Committee the Year Adviser will discuss issues with the student concerned and the nomination will be reconsidered at the next Welfare Committee Meeting.
