Physical Disabilites

At Southern Cross School students with physical disablilities are integrated into mainsteam classes. As an inclusive school we provide accessibilty to ensure the learning experience is normalised as much as possible.

To support this there are ramps for wheel chair access to all parts of the school and a lift to the upper level of the seniors block.

Wheelchair accessible workbenches in Food Technology

Each subject has at least one classroom with modifed work stations available. Specially modifed access is available for equipment in the food technology and Science departments.

Students have access to a teachers' aide whenever required. We also attempt to provide relevant adaptive technology to as far as possible cater to individual student's needs.

Regular meetings are held between parents and staff to develop independent learning programs.

Supervised wheelchair sports are held at lunchtimes on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. These are also very popular with mainstream students who can join in to make up numbers for teams.

Strong peer support with playground and classroom interaction are the norm. Our students form positive and supportive friendships.

Teachers' aides also play a large and important role as mentors.
